How To Set Up A Drum Set

Easy Drumming That Sounds Hard

In this free drum lesson, Jared Falk shows you how he sets up his drum set in a step-by-step approach while elaborating on the dos and don’ts of setting up each instrument. The idea behind this free drum lessons it that of having you set things up to maximize your comfort behind the drum set, which will in turn benefit your playing tremendously. This is the first lesson you should watch on DrumLessons.com, whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced drummer.

When setting up your kit you may feel tempted to do it like your favorite drummers. You must realize that setting up a drum set should be a question of comfort. No two drummers have the same body measurements. Your favorite drummer’s setup might work perfectly for him but be very inadequate for you. The best thing you can do is experiment with the positioning of the instruments on your drum set. Look for the setup that optimizes your playing without sacrificing your comfort.

If you’ve just bought your first drum set – may it be electronic, acoustic, or made out of practice pads – you’ll find the tips herein extremely helpful. Even extremely advanced drummers like Vinnie Colaiuta have had their fair amount of issues with the way they used to setup their drum sets. So don’t think for a minute that just because you’re an intermediate or advanced drummer you won’t have anything to learn from this free drum lesson.

Once you’re done setting up your drum set it’s time to tune the drums. We encourage you to check the free drum lesson “How To Tune Your Snare Drum” to get started right away. If you’d rather start playing, check the free drum lesson “How To Hold Your Drumsticks” instead. There, you’ll learn all about how to grip the drumsticks properly, which is an essential aspect of playing drum set.

Wow, I think you will be a great OB. It seems like you have a real love for children, faemliis, and people in general. Sad to say that those qualities are rare traits in todays world. I believe not just anyone should be in just any job because you could be in a job that you hate and end up making everyone who comes in contact with you at work miserable. You have the joy and care to be great at your job and effect those you will be working around not only by your knowledge , but by your love for what you do.

Could you break down the different cymbal types as far as beginner, advanced or pro. Like Zildjian K-series, Avedis, ZHT. ZBT etc.

    Jared,

Thanks much! I have been running a Gibraltor rack setup now for the past 20 years and have been clamping my HH stand to rack ensuring no movement. Currently attempting to utilized a stand setup similar to yours w/a few differences. Do you have a problem with HH stand walking during the gig? Thanks in advance.

so setting up is a bit of a problem for me ok I can have the bass on a double pedal but what about the hi-hat
I only play on an electronic kit so its not much of an issue but watching this lesson I did wonder how you would set up an acoustic kit

  • Warren Watts says:

I know that most people perfer double pedals, but could a video be created to help people that perfer 2 bass drums?

  • Callum says:

    Hi Jared,
I recently brought a new drum kit because my old one was a beginner kit and there were restrictions on how comfortably I could set it up.
The problem with my new drum kit is toms, I cant get the rack toms to sit comfortably over the floor tom.
What size is your floor tom? Mine is 20 inches but for some reason (maybe my toms are too deep) if I want a more horizontal angle on the toms, there is simply no way.
Thank you for any advice you can give me,
    Callum

    • Alex says:

Your rack sits on an axle type contraption which is connected to the base drum. On that certain contraption, there should be a knob which allows you to freely move the entire rack up and down. This way, your toms can have a flatter angle without having the rims to be in contact with the base drum. The only problem is (and this problem may always occur on the type of rack toms) that this means you may have to change the height at which you sit, and maybe even the entire kit. Remember what Jared said, it isn’t easy to be 100% sure about your setup in case you feel that something is always wrong with it (I still do too, after 6 years drumming). Hope this helps!

There are two specialty oiefcfs I would like to work in. My interest are in the nervous system and the endocrine system. In the 12 years I have been with my boyfriend, he has lost two sisters and a brother to different forms of lupus. He also lost his mother to the disease before 20 years before I met him. I feel working with an endocrinologist or neurologist I will be able to learn more on how these system works. The proctologist office would be at the bottom of the list. After experiencing a lower GI to rule out problems in my stomach. I refuse to go through that again.

  • awesomex123 says:

how do left handers set this up?

    • Alex says:

It depends. If you prefer everything Ie Your snare, and hi-hat being on your right side, put them on your right side. Some lefties prefer playing with everything on the left, but play the hi-hat with their left hand (meaning the sticks don’t cross over each other). Hope this helped!

HiJard, Ive been playing drums about eight yrs now, but I’m still learing. I retired from truck driveing for about ten yrs ago, I wanted to play the the drums after i retired. I played when I was in my 20ts but I didn’t now what I was doing. Know I’m doing a lot better with the help drumming dvd ,one by Tommy Igo and few other drummers. Now I have your web sit now I can learn more. I’m still waiting for Mick Mc drumming lessions in the mail.
I do like the way you showed how to set the drum set. I’m still exspirmenting, I found out it does make a lot differents in how you can play. I learned about doing my fills that my timeing is off. I seen by whatching you I did not know that you don’t have to play the bass drum, thats why my timeing is of. And I could go on. I’m 68yrs old and I’m haveing fun in my yrs, Keep up the good work Jared’ My the good Lord BLESS YOU AMEN! Leon Ross in Bay City Mi. 9/16/11

How Can I tighten my hi-hat? because right now it sounds like a crash cymbol. I do not know much about drums and I have no clue how to tighten it so please help

    • Dan says:

at the very top of the top cymbal is a clutch that you can unscrew. Then put push down the pedal, very slightly and retighten the clutch. If it’s still too high then do it again, but push the pedal down less.

  • LittleRoot says:

Thanks a lot i’m just begining to play the drums and this lessons are wonderful to me. I’ll keep going lesson by lesson to improve my skills.
