Beginner Broken 16th Note Fills

Easy Drumming That Sounds Hard

If you’re reading this, you must be well aware of one of the most popular drum fills out there by now, the constant 16th note single stroke roll drum fill. This pattern is a cool and simple one to use, and can actually give birth to a ton of different drum fills if you spread the strokes around the drum set. In this free drum lesson however, Jared Falk takes you away from that constant pattern by subbing some of the strokes with rests, for coming up with three broken 16th note drum fills.

Before you go through these three beginner drum fills be sure you’ve taken the time to explore the free drum lesson on “Broken 8th Note Drum Fills“. It’s important that you take a step-by-step approach as you go through these free drum lessons, so you can make the most out of your practice time.

Once you’re done mastering these drum fills, you can start to work on your own variations by using these ones as blueprints. The drum fills taught in this free drum lesson are just a starting point. There are literally thousands of broken 16th note drum fills that you can come up with by yourself. You’ll not only develop new ideas of your own, but also develop a very good sense of rhythm.

Move the strokes to different cymbals and drums, and play around with the sticking patterns for coming up with even more variations. Two sticking patterns that are great fits for these broken 16th note drum fills are the drum rudiments lesson 25 and flam tap. Another cool and effective thing you can do is to add quarter notes, 8th notes, or off-beat 8th notes with the hi-hat foot, while playing through broken 16th note drum fills. This is a great way of developing your 4-way coordination. You can also use the drumless version of the song “It’s About Something” from the rock band YUCA, to practice these broken 16th note drum fills or any other of your own variations.

If you’d rather move on, the free drum lesson “Beginner 16th Note Linear Drum Fills” is the next best thing for you. We encourage you to through that one first, because it serves as a great introductory lesson for the content taught in the free drum lesson “Intermediate Broken 16th Note Drum Fills“, since it includes simpler linear patterns – also known as hand-to-feet combinations.
