Learn How To Play Sixteenth Note Drum Fills For Beginners!

Now it's time for 16th note drum fills. Congratulations on making it thus far. Your hard work and patience have paid off. We are going to add to your repetoire with some 16th note fills. Open up the page for this lesson and let's get started!

Since these are sixteenth notes, we will be counting 'one ee and uh two ee and uh' and so on. I will be playing at the same tempo as the last episode, since these are sixteenth notes and not eighth notes, I will be playing twice as fast. It is important to pay attention to your speed and play along with a click track. A lot of drummers have a habit of speeding up the tempo when they go from eighth note beats to sixteenth note beats, you don't want to do that.

I'm going to demonstrate the fills at two tempos. Don't be afraid to start off slower than I do in my examples, or to play faster than I do if you feel comfortable doing so and can maintain an even tempo and consistent sound.

Fill 1 is a simple snare only fill to get you used to the timing.

Fills 2 and 3 add in different drums and play each drum for one beat (four sixteenth notes).

Fills 4 and 5 mix things up by adding varying the drums even more and in a less predictable pattern.
