I can't remember the amount of drummers who have come to me and asked to teach them jazz fills. Since jazz is based around eighth note triplets, we are going to play some fills based on eighth note triplets. Drum fills should be musical, but they should also be fun to play and easy to play. You shouldn't have to think to hard, because often a drum fill can be a spur of the moment thing. For the examples i am going to play a bar of a typical jazz swing groove and a bar of a fill. As you work on these, practice them slowly. Eventually, as you become familiar with them, you will learn to speed them up.
Fills 1 to 6 are played with eighth note triplets. Many of them are variations of the same pattern, just using different drums. Remember that any fill you learn can be played with any of the drums, these exercises are a good example of that.
