Let's get started with beginning funk. You may be looking at the beats and thinking that they don't look too hard. In fact, they look like some of the beats that we may have already played. You'll notice though, that things are just slightly different in the funk beats. Maybe a bass drum is moved over an eighth note, or there are seemingly random open hi-hat hits, or slightly different snare hits. The changes are subtle, but you'll be amazed at how these little changes really bring out funk grooves.
Examples 1 to 10 give a good introduction to beginning funk groves. The rhythms on some of these are slightly different from what you are used to, so start slow and take your time learning them.
