Learn How To Play The Five Stroke Roll On The Drums!

When you first hear about the five stroke roll, and think back to the double stroke roll, you may assume that you are going to hit the drum five times for each hand. This is not the case. The five stroke roll consists of five total strokes. The rudiment is made of up two double strokes and one single stroke. So, if you start with the right hand it becomes right hand double, left hand double, right hand single. At this point it alternates and you start with the left hand. This rudiment presents so new time challenges for you to practice. As you practice, be sure that the doubles are clean and evenly spaced with the single notes.

Examples 1 and 2 both end with the fifth stroke as a quarter note.

Example 3 ends with the fifth stroke as a quarter note as well, but with previous rudiment lessons adds a lead in drum beat.

Example 4 also feature a lead in drum beat, but changes the fifth note to an eighth note and adds another eighth note drum hit after it.

Learn how to play the single paradiddle drum rudiment in the next drum lesson.
