Learn How To Use Double Paradiddles In Your Jazz Drumming!

One of my favorite rudiments to play around the drumset as a jazz fill is the double paradiddle. This rudiment is right, left, right, left, right, right, then left, right, left, right, left, left. If you listen close to the whole sequence it's 12 notes, so it's a full bar of 8th note triplets. These fills can be very cool, but they are a bit challenging. Practice them on your own without a grove at first to get used to moving the pattern around the drumset. Be patient with them and you'll be amazed with the results.

Fill 1 is a simple fill that only uses the snare drum. It is designed to provide simple practice for the rudiment pattern.

Fills 2 - 4 start off a couple of the triplet patterns with toms, but still are solidly rooted in the snare triplet feeling.

Fill 5 changes things up a little bit and is based around high tom triplets.

Fill 6 returns to using the snare as it's triplet base.
