We are going to get into some odd time signatures now. This is where a lot of drummers start to have problems. Turn to the page in your book, or download the file, and let's get started. I want to go over some tips and tricks to develop your timing for these odd signatures. The first is the best way to count. It's best to start off with simple exercises that use quarter notes. Playing quarter notes, I end with two left strokes. This way I can start on my right hand again at the next bar.
As things get more complicated it isn't always easy to end with two left strokes, but in the early going it is a good away to get yourself used to the feel of having five beats per measure instead of four. You've already developed this skill for beats, but now let's take it to the kit and learn some fills.
Fills 1 and 2 consist of simple, progressively fast, snare rolls to get you familiar with the timing and the count.
Fill 3 is a very sparse fill with a rest making up one of the quarter notes and two different note values. It will help reinforce your understanding of the time signature.
Fills 4 and 5 show a little more variety to demonstrate some of the interesting things that can be done in this time signature.
