Learn How To Play 4/4 Jazz With A 2 Feel!

If you are ever playing 4/4 jazz and are asked to play in 2, or play in a 2 feel, it means that you need to relax or mellow out the groove that you are playing. Many times, when you hear the bass player in a two feel, he is only playing half notes. He will play these on beats one and three instead of playing a walking bass line using four quarter notes.

In addition to the grooves in a 2 feel, we have a great play-a-long that let's you bounce back and forth between a 2 feel and a normal 4/4 groove. As you listen to and play along with that lesson, pay attention not only to what I am doing, but what the bass player is doing as well. It will give you a better feel for the 2 feel.

Exercises 1 to 4 use only the hi-hat and cymbals to emphasize the relaxed feel of playing with a 2 feel.

Exercises 5 to 9 bring in the kick drum to add some variety to the groove.

Exercises 10 to 12 are extremely relaxed, hi-hat only grooves.
