Learn How To Play The 3/4 Swing Jazz Drum Pattern!

3/4 swing is also known as a jazz waltz. There is quite a difference between 3/4 swing and 4/4 swing. Obviously the big difference is that there is a quarter note less. Because it is a shorter count, I like to use a two bar count when I'm counting the band in. So I say "one two three, two two three" and then the band comes in.

In the exercises provided I have some common ride patterns that you can practice. There really isn't one that is considered a standard 3/4 swing ride pattern so you'll want to learn them all.

Exercises 1 to 4 are cymbal only patterns

Exercises 5 to 8 bring the bass drum and the hi-hat to those cymbal patterns.

Exercises 9 to 12 also include the snare drum, also on top of the original ride patterns.

Learn how to play 4/4 jazz with a 2 feel in the next drum lesson.
