Hi. What wood do you prefer, birch or maple. From what i understand maple is much louder then maple and has a better tuning range, while birch sounds warmer and produces less volume, and that is why it is mainly used in studios. Any-ways... Which one do you like better.

Based on my experience it is very difficult to hear the difference between birch and maple all other things being equal. I wouldn't fret too much over the birch vs. maple decision. The more important decision has to do with the heads. Replacing the factory heads is a great idea.

Maple is the suggested lower frequency carrier, not birch. Birch, because it's harder would have the more volume.

I'm with Vic in that head's matter more. I'm not sure anyone can line up 8 different types of wood of 12" toms and tell the type just by the sound. Maybe Bozzio but I know I can't...unless maybe that's something you are able to do with true pitch hearing or something...

With that said, I like dark color woods because of..*drum roll* the dark color!

It really is about me buying a new set. Sonor 2007 or 3007. They have the same hardware, but 3007 is maple and 2007 is birch. 2007 + cymbal pack is the same price as 3007. I dunno which one is a better deal.

What cymbals are in the pack? Prepackaged cymbals are usually awful.
IMO, no matter what wood you want, buy a kit w/o cymbals and then get cymbals YOU want.
If you want birch, won't they sell you a birch kit w/o cymbals to save you some money?
. There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

The answer to this is easy: It doesn't matter what wood we prefer, it's what you prefer that matters. Go to a drum shop and test out a couple of maple sets and a couple of birtch kits and decide for yourself.

They'll probably have garbarbe single ply heads on them at the drum store.

I'd go for the birch kit, much lower price because the wood itself is easier to get than maple wood, and very similar sound. The maple shells are more expensive only because maple is not as easy to obtain as birch. Sound-wise, I'd doubt you will have any complaints at all even if you picked a set randomly from the two :) Go with the cheaper one and get yourself a good cymbal set with the extra cash, along with a good set of heads.

The first thing I did when I got my Birch Ludwig set was to replace all the heads ( except the bass ) with Evans Genera G2 Coated heads and they sound great! :)

Like some have mentioned you may not hear a lot of difference between the 2 especially starting out. The biggest difference you'll probably hear is from the heads, either different types and/or differenrt tuning ranges. It might become more of a factor if you were doing studio work but even then it's just a matter of personal preference.

For now I'd say get whatever your budget can handle and use any extra cash for higher quality cymbals. The starter packs sound like scrap metal compared to a good cymbal.

I can buy it w/o cymbals. The ones that came with the kit are sabians. Like the beginner series.

Do you know what series? B8's? B8 Pros? XS20's?

If it's the XS20's, they're pretty good for being " lower end " Sabians.

So if you had a choice of 2007 for 1,200 (5 pce), 3007 for 1,600 (5 pce) or 2007 for 1,450 (6 pce), which one would you choose.
PS: Same hardware: 3007 - maple
2007- birch
