Hey Everyone,

We are getting ready to film a bunch more content for an FDL iPhone/iPad app, as well as start the filming process for our membership site at DrumLessons.com.

I would like to know what your favorite camera angles are. I have attached a pic of our setup where we have 5 camera's positioned on the drums. If you like one of those that's great, if you would like something different then please share.

My favorite angle is a decently placed foot angle and it seems you've done just that :P

2 angles I really like are those taken from the behind from the left and right. I don't know how to explain it so here's a vid of someone I think who places their cameras really well

Camera 'back-right' angle at 0:15-0:16 (great for fills around the toms/cymbals)
Camera 'back-left' angle at 0:22-0:23 (great for intricate hi-hat/snare work)

YouTube Video ->Original Video

These angles are extremely helpful and revealing so I'd definitely recommend considering placing some like those.

If I may say, I find that only the foot and overhead camera in your picture seem properly places. The others seem a bit awkward and I can't really see their educational value right now.

I seem to get the most out of the double camera angle with one on the feet and the other in a more POV type angle. This way I can really see what is being played and when.

The overhead, foot and front view cam are must haves, so they seem cool.

I have issues with the remaining two. The one that shows the kit from far back does not seem to do anything regarding teaching. The side camera is almost cool, but I feel when the drummer crosses his arms to play, his arms will end up obstructing our view of what he's doing on the snare drum.

Now for solutions...

- For the side camera I would put it a little more higher and little more to the right. More higher, because it will enable us to see if the drummer hits the small tom and to the right and higher to have a better viewing of the snare and hi-hat. (I'm just cheking the DS video you sent in the mail, the camera angle you used at 0:30s is what I was talking about, great angle).

Get a 6th camera :), that angle you have on at a:25s on the new DS sales video, the camera on the snare and hi-hat, is great also (it would be even better without the microphone standing in the way).

- I would put the other camera in a position similar to the first one kol talked about. But not like Cobus uses it. It is great for his videos but for teaching it does not seem like the best option, because it's too far from him. You could put it a little more close but showing the entire kit including hi-hat.

If you do test new angles, do it with someone drumming and show us some photos, or even better, a small video. It would be easier to evaluate this way.

Overhead and foot. I agree about the pic's being too small. It's hard to know how they'd work in a full-sized video.

I like the overhead, if we can see the foot aswell like a complete view from the top.

As with most of the replies, the overhead shows virtually everything and a close up of the foot pedals helps a lot.

I don't think the app is finished yet. They only recorded videos yesterday for the app lessons.

I seem to get the most out of the double camera angle with one on the feet and the other in the straight angle. This way I can really see and captured the photograph with the different angles. It also looks very pretty and comfortable with the quality.

Overhead and left of kit. You're not using your DW for this Jared?

Just my opinion, that first one (looking straight at the kit) should be replaced by coming at the kit on the drummers right side. You have nothing from that angle which opens up the ability to focus on the right hand more-so than the other images allow. I just don't see a point of looking from an audience members POV.
