My wife and I built our house. We camped out on our land and then bought a trashed trailer to live in the first winter. You know it's cold when you wake up and the water in the toilet has frozen solid. We didn't have electricity or running water so we carried water from our creek. Later on I built a ram pump (self powered from the weight of the water running downhill) so we had water in the trailer.

Posted Image

Then we had to build a bridge over the creek during the winter so we could get to our build site.

Posted Image

Tying rebar underwater while it is freezing is no fun - trust me.

Success! It looks small but I put three 15" deep wide flanged steel beams under the deck. The deck came from an old railroad trestle. The wood is almost 11" thick. We've had more than 100,000 pounds drive across it and it survived the biggest flood so far which took out some of the county bridges near us.

Posted Image

Now on to garage / shop building so I have some place warm to sleep and a place to work on the house...

BTW, It's snowing outside right now and I'm bored, so rather than practicing drums, I'm digging up old pictures to update my show off topic with hobbies and whatnot.

We designed a garage with a large-ish shop area and a small livingroom / kitchen / bathroom downstairs and a loft with two bedrooms upstairs.

We built a timber frame - large posts and beams held together with oak pegs, not nails or metal brackets. Some of the posts are more than 30 feet long and weigh over 700 pounds. We made a model to think through the spaces and joinery involved. Much easier than making a mistake a piece of 200 year old wood.

Posted Image

Here we are a couple of years later with the full sized version, after much blood sweat and tears (looks like I just watered the model and it grew).

That's so cool, you don't see many people building their own houses these days. The only reason I wouldn't like to do that (other than not having the skill or money or patience) is no high speed internet :o

This is rough in places. I recorded it this morning. Not difficult, but one of my all-time favorite songs.

Nice job Poco. Now, according to Andy C, you can kick viginity out the window and on to that pile of wood in your backyard.

Yeah, I would tell her. Maybe she will tell you that you can stop chopping wood.

When I first got the house idea, I thought about building my own home, ala Poco.

It then occured to me that I wasn't sure what a wall was, let alone how to put 1 up.

My next problem was in-door plumbing. I wanted 2 bathrooms. Don't really know why being it's me and my pup, and she's a small Maltese so she doesn't fit the seat too good. The fact that I know nothing about hooking toilets up, I figured 2 seats on 2 buckets would suffice, though I knew that flushing could present a problem.

Then came the roof. If you put up 1 wall, will the roof stay up in a snowstorm? I think not. So I would have to have 2 walls, which, when you don't know how to put 1 wall up, 2 could present another problem.

Then came electricity. A bad ignition wire, many years ago, knocked me on my butt, so I'm not exactly thrilled with electricity. I thought I could cover that problem with about 40C batteries and a solar panel, but I not too sure about that 1.

Then came air conditioning. I figured that 40 hamsters, on their little wheels might do the trick. Then heating the place came up. 2 walls means I'll need a lot of heat in the winter. So I concocted a plan. I'll fly out to where Poco lives, steal some of his logs, he has so many, he might never notice 50 or so missing. I would then sneak them on the plane as carry on luggage.

I thought I could build a fire on my floor (Damn, I almost forgot, I will need a floor only for the fact that it seems that everyone else has 1). A fire on a wood floor could also present a problem (I'm going to have to think about that 1 for a while) and if the fire is big enough, the roof comes into play.

I could build the house out of concrete blocks but I really don't need a hernia at my age. That would solve the fire problem though.

I could fly Poco out here, give him $1,000 and my Legos set, and let him build a house for me. Don't know if his wife could spare him for 2 years (I have a lot of Legos) but, it might be worth a try.

Maybe I should stick with the drums.

I see the problem.
You need to start with the roof and work your way down to the floor.

Very nice work again, will admit my own ignorance and say not overly familiar with the band but great track and I may well check out some more of their stuff.

Damn, I never thought of that. Doing it that way stops a lot of problems. I'll have shade while I put the wall(s) up.

The different things I've learned on the forum, it's staggering when I think about it.

Thanks, sas!
The Toadies were almost a one hit wonder. The album is "Rubberneck". They disbanded. and have now reformed, but I haven't followed their recent stuff. I need to check them out myself.

You can tell Poco likes the song by the way he plays. That is awesome!!!

My fiance recognized the song and asks when are you covering Tyler? She can sing to both of them ;)

That's cool she can sing!
My next challenge for myself is to play Fool in the Rain. I've always wanted to be able to play that shuffle and samba march with anything close to a groove. I'm going to start working on it and see if I get anywhere with it.

Nice work on your Possom Kingdom cover, Poco. Not familiar with the band, but that song is kinda catchy. :D
