Me

Testing, 1, 2, 3. Where am I?

I'm FDL's weird old uncle at the family reunion.

Since I've posted a lot to this forum some members assume I'm an expert drummer. I'm old and started young, but I had about a 45 year gap from the couple of years I played as a kid until I decided to give drums another spin a few years ago. I have lots of interests so I'm not as dedicated to practice as I once was. I'm in it for the fun and challenge. I'm no expert. In fact, I still put myself in the beginner category for most drum skills.

I've done a lot of woodworking, electronics, and I worked in a tool and die shop out of high school so I have a fairly diverse background. I've had my own business for 35 years selling consumer electronics. I've always loved music and was a stereo freak back in the days of vacuum tube equipment.

This is me before all the piercings :) , doing one of the things I love best; drinking beer and eating good food on a tropical island.

Kits

Here is my original Mapex Pro M kit in Redwood Fade. There have been several additions but I don't have any recent pic's. 22x20 virgin, 14x5, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, Zildjian 'A' Customs, Wuhan 12" splash and 14" china, LP jam block and RRR cowbell, PS Eliminator and Yami Flying Dragon pedals, Tama Ergo Rider throne, this shows Performance II heads. Currently running coated Emperors and Ambassadors.

This is my FrankenKit fresh from the laboratory. Sound Percussion shells, Roland mesh heads, Roland TD-20 module expanded with TDW-20 and VEX packs, Gibraltar rack, Planet 'Z', Wuhan, and Meinl cymbals all triggered, home brew cowbell and hi hat controller on a Pearl hi hat stand. More fun than should be allowed by law. I run it through a notebook with EZ Drummer and Audacity and output to some DIY MTM speakers and sub's I built.

Covers

"Half A Boy & Half A Man" by Nick Lowe

"Dimension" by Wolfmother
If they mute the audio or take it down, here is a link: Dimension at Photobucket

"Holiday" by Greenday (E-Kit version) "Holiday" (same song but played on my acoustic kit)

"Bad Things" by Jace Everett

"Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)" by Offspring

"Possum Kingdom" by Toadies

"Enter Sandman" by Metallica (I was lucky enough to find a drumless track, so for better or worse, this is all me on my old Yamaha Ekit)

"Carpetbaggers" by Jenny Lewis with Elvis Costello

"Hot Rod Heart" by John Fogerty (an early morning song of the month cover; trying to wake up :) )

"Red House" by Jimi Hendrix (Another drumless version of mellow blues in 12/8. I hosed the very end, so I did a second take w/o re-shooting video. As a result the outro audio and video don't match)

"Communication Breakdown by Led Zeppelin
This was my first ever song cover. I never thought I'd post something for the world to see, but the support from the FDL community got me to do it. Notes: I wasn't able to get it up to speed in time for the end of the month. I took the song from 175 BPM down to 160 BPM. Still, I completely hosed the timing for the flam after "SUCK" near the end. Oh well...I've played worse.

When I'm not drumming (my other interests and hobbies)...

Cars
This is my current project. Meet "Yvette". She is a 70 year old Citroen Traction Avant 11BL, a French car used a lot by both the French Resistance and the Nazis during WWII. This was the first commercially successful front wheel drive vehicle, the first to use a monocoque (unibody) construction, and to use independent torsion bar suspension.

Parts of this car were literally being held together with old sludge, mud, and mouse poop. Notice inside the bell housing. Some before & after shots:

After a complete tear-down over a nine month period, this is the first test of the rebuilt motor.

This area is still a construction zone. More to come...

OK so it's not drumming but here is an update on my wife's car project. I've pretty well finished the brakes, front suspension and steering - all new plumbing, brake cylinders and bearings with a complete rebuild of the rest. I'm getting close to dropping the motor and transaxle back in and I'm about to start the wiring.

It was my fav' and I'm left handed. It is easiest to reach with either hand. But the main reason is I'm all that creative. I try to do faithful covers and most of the songs I cover only use one crash from what I hear and what I see in the notation. I do use the others. In fact I have the new Yamaha cymbal and recently I've been using it by far the most (over near my ride).

Sorry - I was talking about the E-kit. I converted a Yami PCY-135 pad to go with my Roland module.
Genuine RB20 rubber alloy.
