When you have the choice between taking an escalator or the stairs, take the stairs.

Oh DrummerChef, almost at 4000 Posts! Make that one count :)

On-Topic: Just like DrummerChef I don't know of any, but I'll do some searching!

EDIT: Possibly http://www.guitartricks.com
It has a clean forum because in it's FAQ it says Mods will edit any innapropriate posts in any way including swears. The problem is only 24 of the lessons are free.

They laugh at us because we're different.
Well we laugh at them because they're the same!

Chick,
Guitarnoise.com is my favorite guitar site. I don't hang around their forums much but they have a ton of great, easy to understand lessons. Definitely worth checking out :)

That's an easy one! :)
http://www.guitarfor...ners.com/forum/

I've been on there for a couple years and that site is to guitar what FDL is to drums. :)

Like FDL there are free guitar lesson videos. Check out Kirk's lesson forums:
http://www.guitarforbeginners.com/forum/ki...guitar-lessons/

In addition a few of the members on the forum (including myself) have lesson forums, which are mostly written lessons but there are a couple video lessons in there also. There is a lot of information on music theory, general guitar tips, learning how to play songs, and lots more.

Yeah, JustinGuitar is a similar thing to FDL, but since it's just 2 guys and a camera instead of FDLs studio, team and several drummers, it covers less areas and seems a bit less professional (but at the same time, less sterile). But nonetheless, it has about the same amount of content.

Hello, durmchic64,
You may try to find out from youtube either. The key words to search probably should start with techical words of guitar lessons as hammer on hammer off (pull off), strumming, guitar, picking guitar splapping guitar etc.. If you want clean sites, probably you must check it out first. Hope this help and wish your son best success.

Sadly the real profesional ones that would be equivelant tend to charge for the whole lesson. I've used some of the guitar sites listed, but never found one that I really like as much as I do FDL for drums.

yeah, there are some pearls among the lessons, but most of it ain't really that good or not for beginners.

Long version:

I think at the early beginning stage (speaking from personal experiences) you should get him a good and proper book containing basic theory and techniques like how to tune the guitar.
When he's getting as far as learning different and more specified techniques such as palm muting, sweeps and harmonics, just to take something out of the hat, then he could begin using the internet to find lessons.

Make sure he learns to play chords first.
I didn't, I jumped to tabs (tabulature) right away, as I was very familiar with them from my bass playing and they're easy to read.
And the music I wanted to play was just riffs, so chords wouldn't help me out very much there.
Took me nearly a year before I started working on chords, and before I did that my fingers were not very submissive to what I wanted them to do; because I could only move one or two fingers at the time. (bass habit)

Also I couldn't play with the school band, or jam with anyone for that matter.
Because I did not care to learn the names of the notes. Or practise scales. Or read theory.
of course you don't need that, you could make a riff and jam to that, but it's so much easier and funnier to just say "hey, let's jam a C twelve".

When I later "discovered" it was really hard, because my fingers wasn't trained to move all at once.
But as soon as I got the "regular" chords down, Em, G, A, and those, suddenly I could play much more complex solos and phrases (patterns).

Short version:

make sure he learns to play chords and some basic theory first to get the fingers working and letting him be able to easier jam with some mates.
Get him a good book, as it'll contain basic theory.
FOR THE SAKE OF GOD; LET THERE BE NO TABS IN HIS FIRST BOOK!

In overall I haven't ever stumbled upon a site like this for guitars, this site is really a pearl.
And the forum; it's heaven.
The forums on UG (Ultimate-guitar) is quite rough, and you have to be 13 to sign up to it.
most of the jokes in there could be quite nasty, and there's a lot of influences of a certain Japanese site with a four-leafed clover as it's logo...
If you know which site I'm talking about, you realize it could get a bit out of hands..
If you don't, I wish I'd be as lucky as you.

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/

Is where I used to go when I played guitar.

The lessons are $15/mo but it's the best $15 you can spend, it's amazing.

Unfortunately it's all tabs, but the forum is free if you don't want to pay and everyone there is polite and respectful. Best of all, they're all there to help and get better at guitar. No non-sense. There is a theory forum too which has a lot of great stuff in it.

It's a great place to learn and they have a lot of collaborations where people from the forum each record a part of a song, check it out!
