Getting my ride cymbal to sound right

the problem is that it builds up way too much resonance. After I ride on it for 5-10 beats it starts developing this ringing undertone that gets louder and louder and starts drowning out my other drums/cymbals. I thought because it was bigger and thicker I wouldn't have this problem but I still do. I can ride the bell but that's a little too high pitched and hard to keep consistent. What am I doing wrong here?

#1 never buy cymbals just by the previews on the websites (I say this from personal experience), most of them r not accurate, always try them at the store first.
Now that u have that ride well all u can do is maybe get some moongels and stick them under the cymbal to damper the cymbal.

But hi-hats and rides are hard to get good ones cheap and considering you hit those more than anything else, to me it doesn't make sense to go cheap unless you are starting out or unsure if you will keep up with it. Check craig's list, ebay, and pawn shops.
But to drop out the wash you can use moon gel/drum gum, or duct tape.

Underneath.
As previously stated u need to go to a drum shop and play some cymbals urself, we could suggest, but once again whats ur budget, what sound r u looking for, what kind of music r u planing to play.
In other words what sounds good to me might not be pleasant to u.

Edit: Also make a flap that hangs down with your duct tape when you put it on. This gives more mass to the tape and that equals more vibration dissipation.
When you get more into drums/cymbals you'll get more of a sound distinction. But until you figure out what you want exactly the cheap ones with tape on them work fine. Usually thicker rides have less wash under normal tapping. I found the ride I wanted by someone on the forums suggesting one I should try and took a chance, I have the Sabian Leopard ride, it is no longer made, but it sounds like you are going through what I was when I first started hating my ride for too much wash. From what I've seen, stay away from "Jazz" and "thin" rides if you don't want wash. I think that a 20" med/heavy ride is probably your best bet.
I'll also suggest you look at the "Dark" series in any line for rides, it usually means softer more complex undertones vs. just heavy washing.
Also you want to match your ride up to your hats, so if you do get a new ride, bring your hats in and have them set them up on a kit.

there's only one music store around here and they don't have all that much to offer in the way of cymbals =/
I suppose I'm looking to play your standard rock music and beats. I'd like my ride to sound like this:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=FsV_S733VSc
or this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq0LDSrbjok...feature=related
(skip to 2:44)
I suppose my budget for a single cymbal would be about $200? though I just spent $105 on this ride, and I have an 18" rock ride (from a package) that I don't like all that much either)

I would suggest the 20" A Custom Medium Ride is versatile and bright w a nice bell
