Unwanted snare buzz, can I stop it?

I recently switched over from an electonic kit I learned on through college to Mapex ProM series, my first real set. Everytime I play the bass drum the snare buzzes a lot, and I've played with the snare tension with no good result. This set came with the free black panther snare, and both snares do it. Is this something that will always happen and I'm asking a stupid question, or is there a way to prevent it?

Try adding tapes or muffling on your snare itself. Also, Muffle your bass with a pillow so you can have that "thud" sound and cut the ringing.

Try tuning you snare differently (higher, especially the reso side). Schroeder uses a method of tightening the tension rods on either side of the snare wires tighter and the rods further away looser. It is supposed to help, but I worry about warping the hoop or stressing the shell. Might be worth a shot, though. I have the same kit and don't have a problem with snare rattle from my bass. You're likely to get it from something, however. The reso head will resonate at some pitch and make 'em buzz.
. You'll never know if you like it until you pull down your pants and take a slide on the ice.

Ok I'll try re-tuning the snare, and look into muffling the bass drum. I know I saw an article on this site about muffling, and its something I have not attempted to do at all.

Sounds like you got the same kit as me, cept I got it a year ago and didn't get a free snare..:P

As for the buzz, I get it bad too and haven't tried fixing it....maybe I'll work on it over the next few days and see what I can come up with.

Heya,

I had this exact same problem when I first bought my kit. And like the above posters said, 1) Put a pillow or blanket into the bass drum, and 2) Spend some time tuning the snare drum. That's what I was initially recommended from here and it helped perfectly. Good luck!
