Wow, this was a tough one for me. I am a huge Dream Theater fan and thus a big Mike Portnoy fan. Although I was never a big fan of Rush I always had the utmost respect for the abilities of Neil Peart, he is truly a great drummer and will go down in history as one of the best drummers of all time. So, for me it is just not possible to pick one over the other. They are both amazing drummers and they both will have their place in history.

I have to go with peart. I like Portnoy a lot but Peart is a much bigger influence on my drumming as is Rush itsself.

I personally think that they both kind of over compensate, like they are both good drummers and all I think Peart has the advantages of play like the bells and xylophones that he attaches to his kits, where as Portnoy, with Dream Theater has a lot more room to spread his wings and become creative.

I personally hate both kits. I'm a simple man 5 piece 2 crashes, high hats, ride, splash, and china. The only little toys that I mess with are a jam block, cow bell, tambourine, and triangle.

I love how discussing drummers becomes like a political debate, just saying.

I don't believe that a 5 piece with splash+china; block, bell, tambourine, and triangle goes down as simple. Simple compared to Peart/Portnoy yea but so is a 12 piece kit.

A simple kit would be a 4-piece with a hats/crash/ride.

I am quite happy that I have lots of extra's on my kit it allows for more creativity. If I could afford it I'd have a 9 piece DW kit.

Portnoy is arguably my biggest influence, and even though I highly respect Peart, I like Portnoy 10x better. Their styles are very different, though...

Agree...

Have you checked idrummag.com interviews with Neil and Mike (issues 1 and 2)?

Definitively prefer Neil.

Imo, neither of them is better than the other. Here are my points. 1. Mike Portnoy is hugely influenced by Neil, so am I. 2. Mike can do many things that Neil can't, and vis versa.

I don't understand your obsession with Max? WTF?

I don't even know wth you're talking about. Is it this?

That's not a son, that's a cymbal configuration.
