Hi,
My name is Raul Shiv Mandapa. I'm from Mumbai, India.
I have been playing the drums for about ten years.
I was self taught for a good part of eight years, which included going off to college and being off the drums for a long period of time.

I started learning or rather un-learning two years back, and recently shifted from playing a right handed kit to playing left handed. I'm naturally left-handed so this has added more to my drumming in terms of dynamics and feel.
Needless to say it has also been one helluva mind....well yeah...

I have a kit at home, a wine -red Magnum with remo skins, zildjian chokes & crash ride and a Baris Anatolian 19" crash.

Hello Everybody!

1. I'm from the US

2. I have been messing around with the drums with no technique and no idea what I've been doing (hoping to change that) for about a year!

3. No Lessons, wouldn't even say self taught. I've just been putting on a song, and playing along the best I know how...

4. My main instrument is the guitar, and I've been playing for about 5 or 6 years now! I also play the piano and bass guitar

5. No, but I've been using the one at my school. Randomly found it behind the stage and been messing around on it ever since!

Hello, I just decided to join the forum after spending a couple months going through some of the video lessons. I have really learned a lot from these lessons.

I'm from the US and have been playing drums for about 11 years. I've resumed playing after taking a long break from drumming after my first child was born due to sound and space issues. More recently though I've found some old friends that wanted to play as a band so I've gotten much more serious about re-learning to play and expand my skills.

I'm self taught and purchased by first drumset when I was 16. I still use to same shells from my original drum, but plan to hopefully upgrade to Tama Starclassic Performer B/B shells in the next year. I play Zildjian cymbals and have slowly expanded over many years. I live in a rural area so lessons would require long travel times. I really wish I could have received proper training when I began playing, but I have never had the disposable income to pay for them.

Where are you from (country, or more specific)?
How long have you been playing the drums?
Did you take lessons, or are you self-taught?
Do you play any other instruments (which ones)?
Do you have a kit? If so tell us a little about it.

Hello,

I live in Omaha and started playing when I was 15 ( like Mr. Falk!) and after high school, left for the service. The recruiter lied about being able to play drums in the Navy! I'm 27 now, and decided to dust off the old kit and get serious again. ( having fun all the while, of course) I took lessons initially learning from A funky Primer lesson book. I currently play a Yamaha DTXplorer 4 pc. kit. :D

Hi guys!

1.Where are you from (country, or more specific)?
I'm from America, but I have lived in Okinawa, Japan for about 15 years now.

2.How long have you been playing the drums?
Almost exactly 1 month!

3.Did you take lessons, or are you self-taught?
Taking lessons right now, 1 hour per week.

4.Do you play any other instruments (which ones)?
Guitar player of about 20 years. Recently our pop-punk band (think NOFX) got frustrated with having to find yet another drummer, and as the non-singing guitarist, I volunteered to learn drums!

5.Do you have a kit? If so tell us a little about it.
Not yet. Just some sticks and a practice pad. I work at a "live house" (that's what they call clubs that have live music over here), so I practice on the house kit - I don't even know what it is, but it sounds OK, I guess.

Once I have a better understanding of the drum and cymbal sounds I like, then I will get a kit.

I want to say I have been reading this forum and checking out the videos and although a lot of the stuff is beyond my physical ability right now it's been fantastic information!

Peace,
Jason

  • Where are you from (country, or more specific)?

From the UK originally, moved to the US 18 months ago.

  • How long have you been playing the drums?

    About 6 years now.

  • Did you take lessons, or are you self-taught?

I took lessons for the first 2 years that I was learning, then it became a bit difficult to fit in with work.

  • Do you play any other instruments (which ones)?

Played the bass for about 6/7 years before moving to the drums. My poor bass barely gets a look in any more!

  • Do you have a kit? If so tell us a little about it.

I have a Sonor F3007 in Autum Fade. Oh man, it's sexy. Sabian AAX cymbals/hats, and some really cheap and trashy splashes and chinas knocking around too. Massive Pearl Roadster throne for my oversize ass :) My brother's a drummer too; when I started he said "Don't skimp on the throne, it'll make a huge difference to how you feel and how well you play." Best advice he ever gave me.

Also have a Yamaha DTXIII Special for practicing at home without initiating divorce proceedings. Meh, it gets the job done, but it's not as much fun as a real kit.

1. I am from Salt Lake City, UT. Aside from a stint in the Navy, I've lived here my whole life.
2. I started playing the drums in 7th Grade, and I played through until High School. Then I joined the Navy after High School, so drumming really wasn't an option. After I left the Navy, I moved into a house with several bachelors who played guitar, so they didn't mind when I bought a set and put it in the basement to play (although, it seems like every time I went to practice, they just wanted to jam, making technical development difficult). We had a falling out about a year later and I ended up having to move. Because I couldn't find a house with a basement that I could afford the rent, I ended up moving into a smaller house with a roommate and very limited space. So I ended up selling my set because it didn't appear that I was ever really going to get another opportunity to play. That was about five years ago. Now I'm 27 and I just bought a house last year, so I have the space, and I've just been waiting till I had the money until now. I just put in an order for a shell pack last week and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I don't have any cymbals or hardware, so it's going to be a while before I can do much on the set, but I also got a pad and some sticks so I can start practicing.
3. I took lessons in High School. Everything since then has been self taught. As soon as I finish building my set, I would like to start taking lessons again.
4. Self-taught guitar. I don't play much, and I usually just end up playing the same songs over and over again. So I'm really good at about 5 songs, but can't play any others.
5. The set I bought is a Pearl Forum 7-Piece Double Bass set. I don't have any cymbals yet, but I plan on getting all Zildjian cymbals.

Just because, here's a little bit more about me. I'm married and I have a son who is almost two years old, and another son on the way. He will be born right about the time my oldest turns two, which is in June. I have a feeling that my son will be a drummer. My wife told me last time she was pregnant that every time we would listen to music, he would kick her in rhythm to the music. I kind of thought she was exaggerating, but as he's grown up, he's shown a lot of interest in music. If he hears any music, he just has to start dancing, no matter where he is. And let me tell you, he's got some mooooves. If I listen to my heavy metal music, then he stomps the ground and growls. He's constantly tapping his foot in rhythm, just like daddy. Then this weekend, when I was trying to practice on my drum pad, he wouldn't be satisfied unless he was playing with me. So we've pretty much decided that when he turns five, he's going to get a junior set and start taking lessons, if I don't decide to teach him myself. My favorite bands that I've been listening to lately are Tool, Opeth, and Fear Factory. My musical taste changes quite a bit with time though. I've also been known to listen to a lot of Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Epica, and Slipknot. Also, it may be obvious by now that I have a tendency to rant, so I apologize in advance.

Here's a recent picture of my son. If I can be a little more like him every day, then I think I'll be okay.

Hi,

My name is Roy, I am from Philadelphia suburbs in Pennsylvania a town called Berwyn. I have been playing drums off and on for the last 30 years and I am self taught with a lot of bad habits. I am trying to learn the correct way to play . I just bought a kit consisting of Gretsch catalina maple with Sabian AA cymbals and gibraltar hardware. I love this kit and enjoy working out on it.

I just want to get to know everyone here a little more. So, here are some questions to help everyone introduce themselves.

Where are you from (country, or more specific)?
How long have you been playing the drums?
Did you take lessons, or are you self-taught?
Do you play any other instruments (which ones)?
Do you have a kit? If so tell us a little about it.

Hi,

I'm from Kuala Lumpur the capitol city of Malaysia. I've been playing for about a half a year or so (I'm not so sure), yes I do take lessons from a music center near my residential area but I also learn new things from youtube too. Nope I play drums only though I'd wanna learn how to play a piano one day when I think I'm ready.

My kit is a Mapex M series I bought it used including Zildjian ZBT cymbals(No longer using this now) from a friend that is upgrading his drum kit to Saturns. It's a rock it but with an additional 10" tom. The finish is in Transparent Cherry Red Lacquer.

Thanks.

Hey there everyone

I live in Waterdown Ontario Canada, but right now am teaching Middle/High school shop classes on a reservation in northern Alberta. I am 50 years old and always thought it would be fun to play the drums. So i bought a practice pad kit and book/CD and started to learn. I went home for the spring break and bought a seven piece kit and am looking forward to playing it in the summer when i get home (got to play it for two days then had to head back up north). I am hooked on the FDL website and play along on the pads as best i can.My kit was not an expensive one. I got a hardly used seven piece black Basix kit and silencing pads for all pieces for $250 CDN.

Well to start off with the first question, Im American. I have been playing the drums for just over a year and I am self-taught. In middle school I played the trumpet in the school band and I played that for about five years before my high school band directer asked me to switch to tuba. For my drum kit, I have a used Silvertone drum kit (pretty generic) 12", 13", and 16" toms, I havent measured the depths, a 14" snare drum, and a 22" bass drum. I had to replace all the batter heads, I have Remo Pinstripes on all the toms, a Remo coated Ambassador on my snare, and a Remo clear Powerstroke 3 on my bass drum. Generic Pearl 14" Hi-hats, 18" Pearl ride and a 16" Sabian Xs20 medium thin crash for the cymbals. I also have a Tama Iron Cobra Jr. double pedal.
