Well, the thread title pretty much says it all. Basically, I need input on what would be the best deal on a cymbal; one that sounds good and will last a fairly good time, but isn't the $600 cymbal. The show that i'm supposedly getting said cymbal for is at the end of this month, in case you were wondering what kind of time frame we were looking at.
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I'm also looking (I know beggars can't be choosers) for a china that sounds less "gongy" and more "whip," if that makes any sense at all.

You should really take a look at Saluda chinas. They are really pretty looking and sounding.

I'm with the poster above. Wuhan all the way, especially if you want a fast China.

If, however, you want a China that isn't Wuhan, anything made from B8 bronze sounds awsome as a China.

The Sabian B8 line is affordable, and sounds great - I have used one for the last year, and it takes an unreal beating every gig and practice, but when I polish it, it looks almost new.

I also have3 a large rectangular sliver of golden colored duct tape on it, because it's really really loud otherwise.

I like Wuhan, but they seem to be love/hate by most drummers. I would say they fall more to the "gongy" side as for sound.

I think they sound like trash - and I mean good trash. I had one that was a 16". It was really old when I bought it, and then I played it for two years, and I bashed the snot out of it. I would turn it upside down and play it as a crash sometimes, and that beat holes in it. I loved the way it sounded the more beat up it got, and finally one of the edges broke off, leaving a large gap in the cymbal almost to the bell. That choked the sound up, and made it sound awful, so now it hangs on my wall.

I agree 100%. I prefer the smaller Wuhans to the larger ones.

The Stagg DH 14" hand made china sounds really great for the price and has a nice trashy sound.

Sabian Holy China, either 19" or 21" - Both are stellar, loud, trashy, and very dry. No gongy sound whatsoever.

Going with the Chad smith ;) or the AAX Xtreme both are great chinas!

Take a trip to your local music stores and test drive what they have. I think you'll find that the smaller chinas will be less "gongy", regardless of the brand.

The Sabian B8 cymbals have a round bell, like a crash cymbal. They don't sound gong-like. Just really dark and loud. I bought some gold duct tape and put slivers of it on the inner edges of the China. If I don't, it ends up being the louder than the rest of my kit by A LOT.
