Ok pretty soon I'll be getting my tax returns and I was thinking of putting them towards a China Cymbal. I want to get one of good quality but I don't know much about Chinas since I have never owned or played one. I plan on trying some out when I get to my local guitar center but before I go I want to have a general idea of what I'm looking for.
The sound I'm after in a china is something close to the sound in the beginning of this song

How can you be yourself when you don't know who you are?

You can find some good sounding chinas that are inexpensive. Wuhan is one. I've got a Sabian pro 14" that I like very much. I think they were selling for about 70 bucks a few yr. ago. Not sure of the price now. Try them all.

Yep, Wuhans are good and really cheap. I didn't like mine at first but I do now, I don't know if it was because I had to "break it in" or if it was the way I was hitting it at first.

As far as chinas go, I can't get enough of my Holy China. That thing is LOUD as all heck, bright, yet dry. Try one out and you'll see what I mean. Oh yeah, it's a Sabian, either Vault or AA depending on how old it is.

I've heard wuhans in both professional and unprofessional videos. Honestly I'm not really a fan of the sound they produce. I'm probably getting somewhere in the grounds of 5-6 hundred dollars so budget is not really an issue

depends on how much you're willing to spend. You can get a 16" Wuhan for 32 bucks on MF, it sounds just like $100+ professional china.

Edit: just saw that budget's not an issue. If that's the case, I consider Sabian's Holy Chinas to be the perfect sounding china cymbals. Other awesome sounds are Zildjian Oriental china trashes (heard in almost every August Burns Red song) or Meinl Mb20 Rock Chinas (I'm a fan of the 20 inch) if you have money left over, Meinl's Generation X Filter China are very cool and different sounding chinas. Check out the breakdown in Lamb of God's "Laid to Rest" to hear what I mean. Meinl Byzance Brilliant chinas also sound sick. Explore your options, go to a store and play some before deciding!

Rather than start a new thread, I figure I can ask this here...
I, too, am getting a China with my tax returns.

Whats the deal with having it upside-down? Why do people do that?

Because of the shape. With the edge turned up, you're more likely to destroy the cymbal and your sticks by hitting the sharp edge. Some people do use them right side up. They sound a little different that way.
. There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

you'll crack it in a second if you play it on the lip. people sometimes lave it right side up and use it as a trashy ride for sizzly jazz sound. but if you're using it the way most people do, and bashing the hell out of it for an explosive accent, then you had better put it upside down : ;)
