I have basic Pearl drum set (Target series). I want to get a better drum set which will last for long. Should I purchase only the snare drum or change the whole set. Toms and bass is ok.
Secondly, if I purchase only a very good snare, then which one should I purchase. I plan to play mainly the rock music. What is the difference between metal and wood shell. Cost is not a big factor if quality is good. I can spent $500-$600.

If I was looking for a snare to spice up my kit, I would go towards an Aluminum Mapex snare, or a porkPie little squeeler. But If you really want the best snare money can buy, try a Custon made uDrum snare. they're kits/snares are the nicest sounding drums i've ever heard.
If I can wake up and play Rocky Mountain High by Dead Meadow every morning, I would live a great life.

Ludwig Acrolite fo' shizzle! (dont really talk like that.) But, seriously. I had one, and it sounded GREAT! I have a pearl export right now, but I don't love it as much, and they're discontinued anyways.

This for sure. Acrolites are some of the most versatile snares out there and I guarantee more than just a few of your favorite tracks were recorded with one. Do some research before you get one though. Ludwig went through quite a few different variations on the snare over the years. Get a vintage one as the new ones are not nearly as good and RESEARCH WHAT GENERATION YOU ARE GETTING. You may also look at getting the bigger brother of the Acrolite, the Supraphonic. It is the most recorded snare in history.

Acrolite, under 100.00 Any era. I have owned quite a few of them in the last 13 years. If I find one cheap, Ill buy it. Never sold one yet. I have given several away.

Take the 500 you have left and pick up some gently used high end cymbals.

Thanks for help.
I thought that I will have to go for some signature drums like Joey Jordison or dennis chambers etc. Iwill check all the alternatives you have given to me.I will certainly go for a very good one for my sensory pleasures.
I will be travelling to Paris in first week of march.I checked on web, they are much more costlier than in US.Any advice on good places in Paris for shopping, since in any case no good snare drums are available in India.

supersensitive is over $800. Other black beauty are about 600$ - 700. What is the advantage of metal over wooden snare.

There is some more confusion. I will go for black beauty - supraphonic or supersensitive.
Which Size 14x5 or 14x6.5, brass or aluminium or wood. I will not able to try any of them since I will order it through amazon (unless I find a shop in Paris)

I "THINK" metal snares have a more cutting sound, so they're used a lot for metal but i'm not really sure

In general: metal is louder and has that metallic overtone / wood is warmer
. There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

that's a very good plan. I'm not familiar with the Acrolite, but i know it is a good snare drum, and if you can get it cheap it'll really save you the effort of saving up for nice cymbals, which sucks

Thanks. It really helps. Any advices on size.
I have good cymbal - sabian legacy 17 crash, Paiste dark crisp hi hat and A medium ride, so that I can go for a good snare. Acrolite seems to be good.It is not shipped to India. I will try to find ways.

I got the porkpie little squealer last month when it was on Stupid Deal of the Day. I'll second the recommendation, if you're going metal (the material not the genre). Once I tuned it to my liking it sounds awesome, even with stock heads.

Ludwig 400 supraphonic (don't know how it costs in the states but it's a brilliant drum)

I looked around quite a bit for a good snare. I didn't have quite as much available to spend on it, but for me the Joey Jordison has been my favorite. Very versatile depending on how you tune it.
Last night I was laying in bed looking up at the stars in the sky, and I thought to myself, "where the heck is the ceiling?"

I had a Pearl Steel Shell for 9 years (stolen on Friday) and it never let me down. I slapped an Evans J1 on it and it was good for anything. It was just a plain snare that came in a kit with a glockenspiel, but it had 10 lugs and sounded great. I would recommend one.

I've heard many great things about the Tama Warlord snares (they're made of metal) i'm not exactly sure how much they cost though.
