Bad Drumming Habits

Hi Guys,

I've just started learning how to play the drums, and I think I'm on the right track on things, just got my kit set up in work (I work in a self storage so free room for me, and no people to get annoyed at the horrible beginner drum sound) I'm just waiting for a practise pad to arrive so I can have something to practice on at home,

Scheduled so far at least an hour a day on the practise pad, and 3 2 hour sessions a week on the kit at work, would you say that is enough?

Main reason I'm here is, what bad habits are really common amongst all drummers?

Slouching, holding the sticks too tightly (or wrongly), hitting too hard, the list goes on and on. The best way to avoid these bad habits would be to either take lessons, or study other drummers and make note of their posture and mannerisms as they play. Or you could put up videos of yourself as well, and the community here would be more than happy to give you tips!
All the best!

Ah cool, I think I'm doing those right so far, just don't want to develop a bad habit in the early stages then struggle down the line trying to break that habit,

But I will watch out for those things just in case I'm not noticing, and make sure I keep timing

I think I might put up a few videos a few months down the line, once I got the basics embedded to my brain lol and start venturing into other things,

This place sounds really good for advice so I think I'll be sticking around here for a while

Thanks

I know this is a little late, but just a quick tip. if you feel uncomfortable, u're probably doing something wrong, so if anything feels weird, check your playing in a mirror (which you should be doing anyways, but just in case you forgot or something) and see what looks awkward.

Looking up or away when playing. It's natural to do so when you're focused, but it's important to actually watch what your doing.

Don't be so eager to play to music that you neglect practicing the fundamentals.
Caution: The above rant has been disjected with sarcasm.

I have been playing for maybe 4 years now and have just started taking lessons, i did have some bad habits which the guy picked up so now i am addressing those.
Learn your rudiments on the pad at home take it to the kit when you can, learn some easy songs and then maybe start to look at lessons, teach yourself as much of the basics as you can before you start lessons but don't overdo it.

Much better, try to play a song and find that you cannot do it. Go practice fundamentals then come back to the song and see how you totally own it.

That's the way I practice.
