Is this a US term for the Friday after Thanksgiving and why is it called this?
Is it because most people have a hangover?

...and the real reason is...
Many retailers don't break even until the Christmas season. They've been operating "in the red". When Christmas season hits they finally begin to turn a profit for the year and are then operating "in the black". The day after Thanksgiving was given the name "Black Friday" since it is the approximate time when this happens for retailers.

nugget? I'm surprised no one is freaking out if those are actually the facts. And then they complain about the economy? Speculatively, very speculative economy if that's the case.
Beyond that Poco, yours is NOT the only meaning that Black Friday is used for. Since the name was rare to me the first Black Friday I had I Did research it. You are just seeing the same thing from a different perspective (as a retail owner I guess). See here:

So no need for ...and the real reason is...

Sensitive much?
I never said my "nugget" was the only possible reason for the term. It has been the common reason given during my lifetime. I can see why your reason may become the connotation of the future, but according to Wiki, it has never been the reason so far. Originally it had to do with the gold market, and later traffic jams = lots of hard work for cops, but it has not been about people fighting in stores. That is a relatively new phenomenon.
BTW, most retailers do turn a profit year-round. Only a handful have such huge holiday sales (e.g. toy manufacturers) that they rely on the last two months of the year to make money. Part of how this was calculated includes taxes. Since small business pay a lot in taxes (unlike the large corporations you hear about), many more companies do rely on the last few months of the year to end up with a NET profit after taxes. With federal, state, payroll, local, property and other taxes, easily 1/3+ of all profits can go up in smoke to the government.
