Speaking of which...
I have been exploring the transition of the open double roll into the closed buzz roll. Does anyone have any tricks or pitfalls to avoid. Such as how to not press into a scratch roll?
Caution: The above rant has been disjected with sarcasm.

Single stroke for me. he physicality of maintaining them at high tempos takes a LOT of work.

I'm not sure how this is hard. I can go faster using my hands than I can with my feet doing the single stroke roll, and my feet can go like 200 bpm. But, that's fine. Everyone learns differently. I'm just surprised not many people said the gravity blast (one handed roll). I think that's more challenging than just going 'LRLRLRLRLRLR' just cuz you only need to use your wrists to do that, whereas the gravity blast requires you to not only know how to use your wrists to a decent extent, but you also need to use the hardware, more specifically the rim, to do it. THAT'S flipping hard! But, hey. That should motivate you! The next time you're struggling to keep that single stroke roll going on, just think: "If theres a guy thats playing faster than me just going LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL or RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, I think I can do LRLRLRLRLRLRLRLRLR." lol ;)

I can do the single stroll at around 160 bpm on a pillow (haven't practiced on real drums in about a week). The rim roll (single handed) is the easiest of them all if you consider Jared's explanation. On the other hand if you do it like Mangini does:

That's not the same Mexican Enchilada. I'm not even sure if that is Mexican. But I think that's the single stroke roll they're talking about here. Mike just applies the "shiver" technique to speed it up to warp speed.

Go do a long sixteenth note single stroke roll (say... twenty bars) at 260 and tell me it's easy :P

Why not do a double single stroke roll? I mean just use both sides of the rim. Or two snares :)

Because it sounds terrible. I'm talking blast beat wise here, one hand on a cymbal the other on the snare.

Name one song where the drummer's doing that. :P But, on the serious side of this post, I can do 240. I can see what you mean by how it's a bit physically demanding.

Blasts as in single stroke roll, or blasts as in Traditional doubles type blasts like:

S S S S S S S S S S S S S
B B B B B B B B B B B B B
R R R R R R R R R R R R R

??? Sorry. Just, I refuse to listen to Death Metal, Black Metal, or Blackened Death Metal.

Traditional blasting, which is sixteenths on the hands with eights on the feet. The type of blast you posted is a hammer blast, which came about later with Suffocation :)

They all sound different and are needed by different songs at different times.

Hardest roll? Hmmm... Gonna have to say single-stroke roll. Sure the gravity blast(single-hand roll for all you non-metal players) is hard to do, but on a drum with even a slightly elevated rim it's easy as pie. Single stroke rolls take precision so it doesn't sound like a jumbled mess. Going RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL across all the toms is hard enough, but doing it on one drum? I just can't seem to do it. My left hand is faster than my right by a LONG shot, and I have NO idea how or why...

I would say the triple stroke roll. After 8 years I still don't have it down.
My name is Joey.

Metronome and practice pad time. Make sure you can hear the metronome before starting the roll and that you can't here while you're playing. Make sure the volume levels are similar.

Probably a clean double stroke roll, where each beat is even.
