i've seen people using a boom stand in two different ways, one is "suspended" and the other, used more frequently where the cymbals is being holed above the stand, is there really a significant difference?? i like the suspended version more because i think the cymbal is looser and has more chance to move and vibrate, what do you think??

It's a matter of preference. If you like it, do it!
I have one cymbal that hangs boom "suspended" style. I did it for two reasons; the area was cramped and that was the only way to get everything to fit (other cymbal, cowbell, etc.), and also because I think it just looks awesome.

Music is just a theory, with some gaps.

Remember when you suspend the cymbal (like a large crash or ride), the entire cymbal must clear the stand. This means a stable stand, and in some cases, one that is counter-weighted. When the cymbal sits above the boom, part of the cymbal can usually be over the vertical part of its stand which keeps the boom shorter and the stand more stable.
. You'll never know if you like it until you pull down your pants and take a slide on the ice.
