I'm going to get my snare drum painted (professionally of course) a bit later this week. I've always been fond of an off colored snare from the rest of the kit, so what color should I paint it? My drum set is white, so I'm thinking black snare, silver, or maybe silver faded into black, but these colors aren't the only ones I'm considering.

I'm no help. I prefer them matched.

Agree with Poco completely. In fact when I went to buy a new snare drum to replace my stock one I was going insane because of how long it took to find one the same color as my kit.
However If you like the snare to stand out in the kit I'd go with the silver in your case.

I would go with something that has an identical white color, but then some other design (e.g., tribal shapes) over the white. Black would do well... or burgundy (something dark). That way, it wouldn't look like you bought mismatching drum set pieces. Instead, you were creative enough to just have the snare personally designed.
This, of course, is probably exponentially more difficult than getting your snare painted a single color.

I think the snare drum should stand out on its own as it is so unique with respect to the rest of the kit. That being said, a nice dark green would be awesome to offset the white. But hey, just my 0.02

It's funny.. When I bought my kit it didn't come with a snare.. It was a red to black fade. Then I refinished it in a green color and picked up a black snare.. I love snares that don't match the kits.
Now I have a dark green/gold snare and a "green tea" kit. Still not matching, still happy.
Personally, far afar I'd think silver would make the snare look like it was rally dirty compared to the rest of the kit. A fade or completely different color would get my vote.

I've actually thought about a cherry burst for it also. I agree with the whole off colored snare thing. I just think it looks "flashy" to have the snare a different color. When I first bought the kid I had a chrome snare I used, but I hated the sound of it, so I switched to the white one. Since I'll be using it for a while, I want to paint it... It's just a matter of how or what color to paint it... Decisions, decisions.
