If a drummer can't hear a song and put some kind of beat to it, somethings wrong. I was playing beats to songs on pillows at 10 years old before I ever even had a set of drums. I just assumed that's how you learned.
If you look around on the net, there are hundreds of guys, both famous and unknown, with their "method" of playing. 90% of it is just a rehash of things that have been around for decades.

I'm with Prog70 on this one. Where's the feedback on the Cobus Method?
To tell you the truth, not hearing any positive feedback about this course, from any of the many people who bought it, makes me a little leary to buy it. Before I make an investment in anything, I like to go and read reviews about the product and see what other people think about it.
So how about you guys and gals who bought this product. Tell us what you think about the Cobus Method! Two hundred dollars is a lot of money to me, and I'm not going to part with until I feel good about my purchase. I can go on Utube and watch this kid play and he's a great drummer. But the question is, can he actually teach other people to do what he does?
Thats the question I want answered.

I know you're just getting into the course, but really appreciate the feedback. Keep us posted.
Ok, so we got this thread happening again.
Anybody else?

I want to develop my ear for drumming, my ability to jam, play with a band, play without music, etc, but I just can't justify the price tag knowing as much about it as I do now. I'm pretty sure if I was really desperate to improve these aspects of my playing, I could simply sit at my drumkit for a while, for free.

Also, there is some feedback from people here who saw some of the lessons prior to the launch of the product:

Hope that helps.

Sorry Jared, but there's not a single piece of feedback at either of those links.

What were you you hoping to get out of it? And, if applicable, how does it compare to other dvd (or otherwise) drum lessons you've purchased.

What do you think is the biggest difference between your approach and the cobus method?

Anybody who has been playing for a while, whether it's to records or in a band, even if they are self-taught, at the very least, plays by ear.
I admit that I haven't seen it. Mainly because I'm not going to spend $150 on something I don't need because I went through to self learning process 55 years ago.
Cobus is a fine young drummer, but, he isn't some innovative genius with a revolutionary approach to drums.

I had the opportunity to actually work with Cobus on developing the method and I do agree it is more targeted towards beginners. That said, I have been playing for 15 years now and I have learned a ton from Cobus through the videos that we filmed and during the time I was able to spend with him while he was out here.
Some things that I learned are:
- Tips to try and figure out songs by ear. He explained his mindset in how he approaches new songs. These tips have worked really well for me.
- Incorporating sweep & herta patterns around the drum-set
- Cool ways to develop linear patterns (this is something he showed me in private)
- After seeing him work with the band I was inspired to try a few things out during my next band rehearsals
- Watching him create the drum parts for the play-alongs was very inspirational for me as I had played along to all of them prior to the start of the video shoot. It was really interesting to see his complete opposite approach of mine to some of the songs.
These are just a couple things that I can think of now...There are many more. Overall, the product just really inspired me to have fun with drumming (I know it's sounds cheesy). Over the years I've been lucky enough to turn my passion and hobby into a full time job with staff and accounting and customers etc. Occasionally it feels like work and getting the chance to work with Cobus just really inspired me to start having fun again...in my teaching AND in my drumming. I have since taken on a few more live gigs, studio sessions and started to practice stuff that I never would have.
If watching Cobus and learning from him can do this for me I know it can work for others as well. Will it work for everyone? NO. I understand that. If one product were to work for everyone then we would've only ever published one product
Contrary to what some may think, I actually like hearing all the feedback. Positive and negative. I understand not everyone will be happy with every product and I like to know why so we can continue to improve our products and free lessons in the future. The last thing I want to do is become completely stagnant with our lessons, never improving or evolving.
Anyways, that was a rant and a half.

when I started playing the guitar at the age of 19 I refused to learn how to read notes and learned everything by ear, since I've always had an ear for music. Fast forward to today, I changed my mindset and was determined to learn how to read notes for drums. I find with knowing how to read notes and use my ear has helped me progress tremendously. Maybe if my mindset was like how it was when I was in my ealry 20's it would be a different story.
However, for someone like myself I wouldn't buy the cobus method. I'm a huge fan and respect him as a musician immensely. As weird as it sounds I enjoy figuring things out on my own, reading notes, trying to transcribe music as I hear it. Perhaps it's because I've matured in my middle years or as mentioned I just enjoy the challenge now. When I was younger I was just too lazy and too prideful.
It would be great to see some folks post some videos or examples on how the DVD has helped their drumming.
