I am buying a new kit, a Mapex Meridian Birch and it comes with Remo UT heads on it. Does anyone have any experience with these? I am just wondering if they will be tolerable until I wear them out or if I need to save in order to make sure I have enough money to buy new drum heads all around when I buy this kit. Any feedback is appreciated

To begin, I think you should buy the kit when you have the money regardless of whether you can afford new heads. Prices could rise while you wait for drumhead money and it would be silly to have missed your chance over drumhead choice.
I think what's more important is whether the style of head suits you. I'm pretty sure the UT heads will be single ply, and that might not be what you want. However, dealing with single ply meanwhile will be a good lesson in tuning.
I suggest you do a Google (or whatever) search on Remo UT heads. I did a quick one and saw mostly, but not all, good reviews.
Music is just a theory, with some gaps.

Yeah I already have the set ordered so I plan on getting it now regardless of whether or not I keep the heads. Just was wondering what people thought

I'd get rid of them as soon as possible. These are stock heads. . . stock heads are known to be garbage. I'd replace the snare with a Remo Pinstripe, and the toms with evans onyx heads. Pinstripes are great for medium to low tuned snares (I like a higher tuning, so i got the batter head cranked up to the highest I possibly can get it. I tuned it so that it's probably JUST under the state of overtightened), and the evans onyx heads are AMAZING with low-tuned toms. I wouldn't trade my onyxes in for the world (okay maybe for ownership of the world, I would. They're just drum heads. But, you get my point. lol)

I have no experience with these heads, but the fact that they are Remos means that they probably won't sound too horrendous compared to stock heads made by drum companies. You're probably gonna wanna replace them with your choice of heads ASAP, because they are stock heads, but in the meantime I don't think they'll be so bad.

I have a Mapex kit and it came with those same heads. Even though they are Remo single ply, they are nowhere near as nice as Ambassadors which is what I have on some of the toms now. They'll work for you, but replacing them ASAP is a good idea.

Think I can get away with replacing only batter heads?
Absolutely.

Remo UTs are just Chinese made heads. They should sound fine. I've played a mapex meridian maple in the drum store before and it sounds good.
My name is Joey.
