Hello Drumming Community,

I guess I should start off with a little about me as this is my first topic so I'll use it as an introduction as well. I've ben playing drums on and off since I was about 11 or 12 and I'm 23 now so pushing more than ten years. However, there were years in between then when I didn't pick up my sticks at all and it's only been in the last 2 years or so that I've started playing more often again, and how I've missed those drums!
I recently replaced my old Pearl World Series kit (some ancient 2nd hand kit that had definitely seen better days!) with a Tama Superstar Hyper-Drive kit and I couldn't be happier with it. I'm liking the set up I've got going at the moment, apart form my hi has which are pretty naff Sabian Pro Sonix 14"s. When I get some money together, they're gonna be the first thing to be swapped for sure!
Anyway, the point of me starting this thread I suppose is to post a few videos of me doing some drumming. I started off posting some covers on YouTube just for fun really but I've started getting into it much more, espcially since learning another drummer's patterns and grooves has forced me to learn new beats and rhythms that I can take to my own playing style. I've done a few video edits you'll notice, but the audio for each song has been taken from a continuos take from the "overhead" camera position. My kit's not mic-ed up in anyway so it doesn't sound fantastic, but the drumming is the important bit anyway right?!

Tubelord - Somewhere Out There A Dog Is On Fire

Everything Everything - Schoolin'

I'd love some feedback on my playing. Thanks :)

Laurence

The video quality is outstanding man. And for the kit not being mic it sounds really really good.

Not many people on here will actually comment much on someone else's drumming, sadly. But very nice work, man. Keep it up!

Very nice, subscribed. Are you SURE you don't have some mics? What kind of camera are you using?

Thanks for the subscription, and yeah, there are definitely no mics involved! The camera I was using for some of them was a Canon 5D Mark II which has a fantastic built in microphone but I had to give that back to its owner as I on;y had it on loan for a short while. Otherwise I've borrowed a Canon 550D which has a pretty good mic, but not such a good sensor, so my fisheye seems a little blurred around the edge. I'm thinking of picking up a zoom portable recorder to record some sounds with so it comes across a little cleaner at least.

Here's another one that I put together, not quite so impressive technically, but sure was fun to play!

Some Brand New this time. It took me quite a while to get this one right because of all the different fills and the different accent notes that I had to memorise but I'm really happy with the outcome.

Here's a Reuben cover. If you haven't heard of them, then you definitely need to check these guys out. They broke up a little while ago but not before they released 4 absolutely cracking albums. Hope you enjoy.

I haven't had time to check up your drumming yet. My Computer just BSOD on my (Windows 7) while loading the first video. But I have a question.

What have you put around your drum kit?

In some video stills it looks like you've surrounded your kit with either a drum booth or mattress pads, which is probably why people think it's miked ;). I have my kit on a room and would love to isolate it as much as I can.

I guess your computer is giving you hints to get a mac instead ;)

Actually I don't have any kind of matressing around my kit, it's just in my bedroom (which actually come to think of it is a pretty padded space anyway, what with having the duvet on the bed, drawn curtains behind my kit and a sofa soaking up some of the sound. Maybe that's one of the reasons why the kit doesn't sound really reverby - never actually thought of it like that.

I've actually got a set of 2 microphones, an SM-58 and an ancient condenser microphone that I was thinking about setting up in the 'recorderman' positions around my kit. Either that or close micing the bass drum port and then using the condenser as an overhead and my laptop microphone the other side of the room picking up any room sounds. Does anyone know of a semi-decent way to set up a kit with only 1 condenser and 1 dynamic microphone?

Ha,
I guess the curtains are to keep the people looking at the drumkit?
Definitively the couch is helping.

Mac, no thank you but thank you.
I work with all sort of devices: Macs, PCs, Androids, iPhones, iPads, etc. And so far I don't like MacOS. It has done similar things to me. I don't think is that much better than the latest PC OS. It just claims it is.

Yeah the curtains are there to keep people from looking in. I live opposite a primary school and it keeps the kids from standing outside my house when I'm playing if they're coming out of school, I used to have my kit facing the window but it kept putting my off when I could see them there...
Also, it dampens the sound coming out of my house so my neighbours don't get too mad as recently I've been playing everyday for an hour or more.

Yeah, the school is literally about 100m from my house! Luckily I haven't had any noise complaints the whole time i've been playing drums which is surprising really. My neighbours too, manage to put up with it for the most part. But I try to be respectful and play between certain hours each day so they kind of know when to put their ear plugs in, haha!

Drum videos have slowed down a bit because I've started a new job and don't have as much time to play but i'm working on a new one. This Town Needs Guns - Dog. Check them out if you haven't heard of them before, they're definitely a drummers band (but all of them are incredible at their instruments).
