Hi,

I am going to perchase some new batter heads for my Tom Tom drums, but i am stuck between the.. Smooth White Remo Emperors, or the Coated white Remo Ambassodors (as i have been told they make good tom heads).. and i was wondering weather you could perhaps help me out with some advice.. Im looking for a nice (which i call) normal warm tom tom sound, which kinda has a nice deepish sound to it..

if there are any other Remo heads that you recomend, please let me know. :)

Thanks guys, i look forward to the replys.

One of the first things you should do is go to your local music store and see if they have either of those types set up on their drums. As it is, each person has their own preferences on drum sounds, so its best to get heads that you enjoy. What I prefer might sound like garbage to you.

Another thing you could do is look on youtube for test demos of the heads you're looking for. The sound isn't always the same as it would be on your kit, but it can give you some ideas of whether you like 'em or not.

Personally, I'd go with the Emperors, myself. (I have the black emperors on my set with the anti-buzz rings, and I love 'em!)

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

i did check my local drum store but they didnt have any set ups with those heads on :( and i had a quick look on youtube but there wasnt many videos with emperor heads on tom tom drums (well, at least i couldnt find none lol) i was told by a friend that the Smooth white emperors where pretty good for tom toms and they give a nice sound.

Try this video:

The description says the toms all have smooth white emperor heads. Although, the sound kinda sucks, unfortunately.

This will go against the grain, but I have Diplomats top and bottom on all 6 of my toms. They go from 13x10, 14x10 16x16 18x16 and a 14x10 and a 15x14 mounted over the floor toms. If I sit and play with them, I can go from a fairly deep sound to a light bouncy sound with them.

Remember that a lot is in the tuning.

What music do you play? Are you a hard hitter?
If you play Rock more than anything, go with the Coated Emperor, it's what I have, and I'll likely never change. Also, if you hit hard, go with the Coated Emperor, it'll last longer than the Ambassador or Diplomat. You'll run through those heads pretty fast if you hit hard. If you play Jazz a lot, stick with a Coated Ambassador. When you tune each head to about the mid range where you can still get some rebound of the head easily, the Emperor will be a lot lower than the Ambassador. So it sounds like if you want that low sound, go with the Coated Emperor. Good luck!

I'd also go with Emperors, but I find Remo coatings pretty much suck. They will be fine for sound, but won't last very long.

For low tunings, Pinstripes are king. You won't get as much resonance though as an Ambassador or an Emperor. I'sd say try regular coated Amb on one tom, and see if you like it. If not, try a coated emp, then a coated Pinstripe, etc until you find what you like.

+1, I use remo emperor clear batters on top and clear ambassadors on the bottoms, the last set of emperors I used on my toms lasted 8 months(and I play every day)and you can purchase a tom pack of emperors at musicians friend for $34, I like the emperors because I can crank up the batters a little bit more and not get so high of a tone like the ambassadors, while doing this the stick response is much better.
The only time I ever had a remo coating last for a while is on my snare batter and I think the reason is because that head is cranked up so tight, of the remo heads that I have put on a toms the coatings have only lasted like 20 minutes, I don't think the coatings fair so well with a lot of flex. :D

I agree, checkout the Evans coated G2's. Here's a recording I just did with them tonight.

I use Remo Pinstripe heads that make a nice deep warm sound and I think those are the best tom heads made by Remo but that just my opinion.
